JOINT ACTIVITIES
Lhoba Indigenous People of Lo-Menthang Village
of Upper Mustang in Nepal
Lhoba Indigenous People are organized through customary institutions and informal
groups. These institutions are part of the culture and worldviews of Lhoba people. The
spirit of those customary institutions are founded on safeguarding and sustaining
Lhoba values, lifeways, worldviews, identity, and their knowledge system/science.
Lhoba communities are developing an upland sustainable community resource
management system that covers forest, land, and water. This consists of a traditional
ûre prevention system, water impounding and moisture capture, reforestation, and
waste management. Water management (for irrigation) is a top priority in the arid
land of Lo-Menthang, including the construction and maintenance of irrigation canals
and water distribution for domestic and farming and other activities. The renovation
and care of cultural heritage, trails, monasteries, community halls, and many other
collective properties in their community are also part of the communal activities.
Community capacity building and economic empowerment is focused on women and
youth on economic management, innovative methodologies, marketing planning and
administrative work.
