The training of new Mayangna professionals in Bilingual
Intercultural Education was prioritized in 2022, in
coordination with the National Council of Universities of
Nicaragua, regional governments, and the URACCAN
University. Likewise, the strengthening of traditional
medicine continued, supporting the holders of the
knowledge of healers, midwives, and others through
practical workshops on the elaboration of medicines and
treatments. In addition, the infrastructure of the community radio was improved with the addition of editing and
recording equipment.
The Nación Sumu Mayangna, or Mayangna Nation,
encompasses nine territories in Nicaragua covering
8,101 square kilometers of tropical rainforests and pine
savannas, with 45,000 people in 75 communities. The
Mayangna have three levels of governance: (1) the
Sulani Mayangna government, (2) the Asangni of the
nine Mayangna territories, and (3) the Mapaki4the 75
community governments. The Assemblies are held at
all three levels where they make decisions on issues
concerning their territory in accordance with their
traditions and customs. The national assembly is led by
The Government of the Mayangna Nation also expanded and strengthened the presence of authorities in the
territory, as well as legal advice to resolve conûicts over
communal land ownership.
The Wampis of Peru9s northern Amazon have a culture
rich with stories going back thousands of years, interwoven into the ecosystems and landscapes of their
territory. In 2015, the Wampis collectively built an
autonomous territorial government, the ûrst in Peru to
encompass an entire Indigenous People occupying a
single collective territory. Governance is based on a
Statute that lays out the Wampis vision for the future
in all areas of life including religion, spirituality, education, language and recovery of ancestral places. The
Statute requires that any activity that could aûect
