Wampis territory must secure the Free, Prior, and
Informed Consent of the Wampis, and no Wampis
community can make a unilateral decision that aûects
others. There are speciûc provisions to guarantee the
participation of women in governance, and the respect
of women's rights in their communities. The Wampis
are also working intensively on governance and
socio-environmental monitoring, defending threatened
leaders and monitoring territories, forests, and biodiversity from deforestation caused by the presence of
illegal loggers.

ECUADOR
Achuar governance includes 88 communities and 21
associations. Each community has its own elected
representatives. The Achuar representative organization was formed in 2005. The Federation of the
Achuar Nation of Ecuador (NAE), represents the
Achuar communities and associations at the national
and international level. NAE leaders are elected every
three years in a congress where at least ûve representatives from each community participate.
Achuar governance, and all of Achuar life, is guided by
Arútam4the sacred source. Arútam resides in sacred
places; no one is born with Arútam, but each person
has to ûnd it. Arútam can come in visions from a
powerful animal, a mountain, or a natural phenomenon. Arútam gives the Achuar power, energy, skills, and
guidance.
The Wampis prioritized the strengthening of the
Autonomous Territorial Government of the Wampis
Nation (GTANW), the process of rebuilding their
autonomy, and the exercise of self-determination.
Investments were made throughout 2022 in improving
the communication systems of the Wampis Nation,
speciûcally in the Wampis radio station, which plays a
fundamental and strategic role in the management of
their territory and consensus building.
Likewise, in accordance with their holistic vision, they
worked on strengthening their technical, economic,
administrative and educational systems. They held a
Teachers Congress, and focused on the recovery of
musical and artistic arts. They strengthened their
humanitarian emergency support, including the provision of medicines. They invested in institutional

The Achuar in Ecuador have been living for thousands
of years in large territories in the Amazon of both
Ecuador and Peru, along both sides of the border. In
Ecuador, the Achuar have a legally recognized territory of 680,000 hectares and their full territory is
