The Rapa Nui People9s governance structure on
Easter Island has three traditional representative
bodies: the Council of Elders, the Rapa Nui Parliament,
and the Honui, or Assembly of Clans; which represents
the 36 families that make up the municipality. These
bodies work in consultation, and side by side, with the
municipality. The mayor is a member of the Rapa Nui
Council of Elders, the highest representative and
traditional body. The Municipal Council (whose members are all Rapa Nui) works on cultural, environmental, social, and human rights initiatives. The Municipal
Council, with the approval and support of the community, maintains the principles of traditional Rapa Nui
customs and organizes open community conversations
to tackle themes that aûect the territory. They conduct
consultations, identify needs, and determine short,
medium and long-term planning. They execute
programs, conduct dialogues with the State and plan
for the future. The Rapa Nui people are focused on
caring for nature and all members of their community,
while seeking a sustainable world based on their
traditional knowledge and strengthening their culture.
Signiûcant focus was spent on working with school
children in 2022. They created songs that strengthen
cultural identity and care for nature. They developed
vegetable and fruit tree gardens and an educational
farm, all while teaching children respect for nature and
the importance of food and health. They also shared
traditional stories through creating comics and videos.
One of the advances in education is with identity in
schools4from the age of two, children begin learning in
the Rapa Nui language. The community has managed
to adapt their identity and language to the national
education curriculum in Chile. In addition to education
eûorts, Rapa Nui representatives have been actively
involved in the constitutional process in Chile at the
national level.
