CONCLUSIONS
Another common concern shared by Wayûnders Circle members is related to the migration
of youth. Migration to cities facilitates access to higher education, potentially leading to
communities having access to Indigenous professionals to ûght for their land and resources.
At the same time, some youth never return. Furthermore, it disconnects youth from their
communities of origin and puts the transmission of traditional knowledge at risk. How do
communities achieve a balance between access to higher education for Indigenous youth
making it possible to support their communities, and at the same time not lose valuable links
to their community and their identity?
Indigenous Peoples have continued to demonstrate the strengths of their communities and
capacity for resilience throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. As part of resilience and adaptation to a world with accelerated changes, many Wayûnders Circle members are using
technology as part of a process of innovation. The use of social networks, educational
videos, radio, websites, and other technologies allows them to distribute Indigenous traditional knowledge amongst the younger population. In addition, the use of satellite technology
provides tools to help with the defense and management of their territory and resources.
Advancements in technology have also allowed some communities to compensate for the
reduced reliability of some bio-indicators, which, due to climate change, are no longer as
eûective as they were years ago.
All the members of the Wayûnders Circle have a holistic vision of self-governance and
include the strengthening of their traditional knowledge systems in various aspects of their
work, including: monitoring and management of territories, organizational strengthening,
education and intercultural health, Indigenous languages, communication systems, spirituality,
mobility, and logistics; among other aspects.
For many, the Wayûnders Circle is understood as a legacy for future generations, bringing
hope for a future world incorporating Indigenous traditional values and spirituality.
