Participation at the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues
In April 2022, three Wayûnders Circle members participated in the
United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII),
including Robert Paul from the Native American Land Conservancy,
Anders Erling Fjällås from Sámiid Riikkasearvi, and Clea Schooner
from Heiltsuk Nation; as well as representatives from the convening
organizations Pawanka Fund, Nia Tero, and the World Union of
Indigenous Spiritual Practitioners.
Members gained visibility, learned valuable advocacy strategies engaging with UN
bodies, and coordinated with the global Indigenous movement. Before the session,
members participated in an online training that provided strategies for eûective
engagement and preparation of interventions, among other key information.
During the UN Permanent Forum, the Wayûnders Circle members shared their
experiences on a hybrid panel (virtual and in-person) on “Indigenous Governance:
Wayûnders Circle Learnings,= organized by Pawanka, Nia Tero, and Council of
Elders. The objective was to discuss and reûect on eûorts in Indigenous guardianship,
territories management, governance systems, and what they have learned. During the
session a ûve-minute ûlm on the Wayûnders Circle was released, as well as a report
prepared by the Pawanka Fund and Nia Tero with input from the members of the
Wayûnders Circle,
