PREMIER'S DEPAR TMENT, SYDNEY.
WEDDING PRESENTS FOR H.R.H. PRINCESS ELIZABETH —
LOST PACKAGE.
Included amongst the gifts presented by the New South Wales
Government to the Princess Elizabeth on the occasion of her mar—
riage were three special quality rugs and six pairs of special
blankets which were intended for the Princess' personal use.
These gifts, which were not insured, were despatched by air in
three packages through Qantas Empire Airways on 8th November,
1947, addressed to the Agent General.
However, a parcel containing the three rugs, which wel'e
purchased from John Vicars and Co., Pty., Ltd., at a cost of
£12. 1. 6. was not received by the Agent General, and subsequent
inquiries- by both the Agent General and Qantas Empire Airways
failed to reveal any trace of the missing goods.
An advising was sought from the Crown Solicitor as to the
extent, if any, to which this Department has a claim on the air—
line for the cost of the rugs and/or for a rebate of a proportion
(An account for 283. 13. 9. rendered
of the freight charged.
by the Company for air freight has not yet been paid.)
The Crown Solicitor has now expressed the opinion that the
carrier is liabb to pay the value of the lost goods, but that
a claim for rebate of part of the freight could not be sustained.
IT IS SUBMITTED FOR APPROVAL that, in the first instance, a
verbal approach be made to the Company with a view to adjustment
of the account to exclude the cost of the rugs, and a proportion,
say one—third, of the freight charged, i.e. a total reduction of
£39. 19. 5.
