The returns records date of death, names, bond
or free, cause of death, if a prisoner and ship of
arrival.

The volumes contain reports from coroners on
inquests held throughout the colony, including a
few held in Van Diemen's Land. The deaths were
mostly caused by drowning, apoplexy or a
'Visitation of God'. Later reports for June 1828
are located at [2/8290] microfilm copy Reel
2233, also in the *ARK.
The volumes have been indexed by State
Records – entries have been made for the
deceased and witnesses but not for the jurors or
coroners. A list of entries made for each volume
is located in the front of each.
An index is also available on Reels 1250-51 in
State Records' reading rooms.

The letters are of an administrative nature and
only continue until 31 Jan 1889. The returns
relate to such matters as absolute and
conditional pardons granted, convicts who died
or absconded, tickets of leave granted, and
convicts confined in lunatic and invalid asylums.
The Inspector General of Police was also the
custodian of convict records and many of the
letters are replies to requests for information on
particular individuals.
