A Guide to New South Wales State Archives relating to Responsible Government
The first Proclamation is that notifying the constitution of the
Executive Council and the appointment of new members to the
Legislative Council under a warrant dated 17 July 1825. Another
Proclamation appointing members of the Legislative Council is that
of 24 March 1828.
This is followed by the Acts and Ordinances of the Governor and
Council, 28 September 1824 to 1 September 1828. The first Act in
Council relates to making promissory notes and bills of exchange
payable in Spanish dollars to be "valid, negotiable and transferable
Instruments".
Several indexes to Acts and Ordinances, including one to Acts of
Parliament adopted in New South Wales 26 March 1828, are
located at the back of the volume.

These are original copies of the Governor's Proclamations and in
many cases bear his signature and seal. The four pages which
have been filmed comprise the Proclamation of 20 December 1825
notifying the constitution of the Executive Council and new
appointments to the Legislative Council under warrant of 17 July
1825.

Other Proclamations relating to the Legislative Council are those
dated 24 March 1828, 13 July 1829, 11 January 1830 and
14 September 1831.

A collection of Acts concerning the Government of New South
Wales and Tasmania, and the Constitution; and the Governor
General's commission and instructions.
Included are some of the major acts relating to parliamentary
institutions in New South Wales such as 5 & 6 Vic c.76 An Act for
the Government of New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land,
assented to on 30 July 1842; 13 & 14 Vic c.59 An Act for the
better Government of Her Majesty's Australian Colonies, assented
to on 5 August 1850 (otherwise known as the Australian Colonies
Government Act); 14 Vic No.48 An Act to provide for the division
of the Colony of New South Wales, after separation of the District
of Port Philip therefrom, into Electoral Districts, and for the
election of Members to serve in the Legislative Assembly, assented
to on 2 May 1851 (otherwise known as The Electoral Act of 1851);
18 & 19 Vic c.54 An Act to enable Her Majesty to assent to a Bill,
as amended, of the Legislature of New South Wales, 'to confer a
Constitution on New South Wales, and to grant a Civil List to Her
Majesty', assented to on 16 July 1855; and, 22 Vic No.20 An Act to
amend the Electoral Law, assented to 24 November 1858
(otherwise known as The Electoral Act of 1858).
Also included are papers, ordered to be printed by the Legislative
Council on 31 October 1855, relating to the Royal assent to the
new Constitution Act of 1853; copy of the Government Gazette of
20 October 1857 concerning 20 Vic. No.10, An Act to repeal so
much of the Constitution Act as requires the concurrence of
unusual majorities of Members in the Legislative Council and the
