A Guide to New South Wales State Archives relating to Responsible Government
When a motion was put requesting material and/or information to
be tabled, the Colonial Secretary produced the documents which
were returned to him. This register refers to these. It shows
registration number, date received, Council or Assembly number,
date the motion was made, on whose motion, by whom presented,
subject (copy of the motion which was submitted), how disposed
of, and remarks.
There is an alphabetical index in the front of the volume.

Included are:
• CSIL 48/3048: petition of Colonists of New South Wales
remonstrating against changes in the Constitution (forwarded
to the Secretary of State in Governor's Despatch No.31 of
2 February 1848)
• CSIL 48/6531: memorial of inhabitants of the District of
Windsor respecting projected changes in the Constitution of
New South Wales (forwarded to the Secretary of State in
Governor's Despatch No.71 of 27 March 1848)
• CSIL 48/6533: petition of inhabitants of the Electoral District of
Penrith respecting projected changes in the Constitution of New
South Wales (forwarded to the Secretary of State in Governor's
Despatch No.71 of 27 March 1848).
The protests were directed against changes in the Constitution
indicated in the Secretary of State's Despatch of 31 July 1847
(No.203), which had been published for general information.

North Australia was erected into an independent Colony on
17 February 1846 but its charter was revoked by Letters Patent
dated 28 December 1846. The territory comprised in the Colony of
North Australia was reattached to New South Wales by the Letters
Patent dated 3 April 1848 which extended the limits of New South
Wales to the north of the 26° of South Latitude.

CSIL 49/400 comprises papers dating from 1846 to 1849 relating
to the extension of New South Wales northward of the 26° of
South Latitude. Included are: memorandum on and draft
proclamation for proclaiming the boundaries between New South
Wales and North Australia; summary of proceedings of the
Executive Council on 28 June and 2 August 1847 relating to the
Letters Patent revoking the charter under which the colony of
North Australia was established and notification of the Commission
appointing the Governor to be Governor and Commander in Chief
over that Colony; copy of Secretary of State Despatch No.66 of
12 April 1848 transmitting Letters Patent of 3 April 1848 extending
the limits of New South Wales to the northward of the 26° of
South Latitude; summary of proceedings of the Executive Council
of 12 September 1848 relative to the Despatch from the Secretary
of State, in which it was recommended that the advice of the Law
Officers be sought on the manner in which the public notification
of the North Australia Charter and the extension of the boundaries
of New South Wales should be made as well as, if by Proclamation,
