Solicitor's advice of 21 November; and drafts of the Proclamation
as well as a copy of the Letters Patent erecting North Australia as
a separate Colony.
1849 Miscellaneous — CSIL 49/5854
CSIL 49/5854 is a letter dated 20 June 1849 from Robert
Campbell, as Chairman of a meeting of Colonists assembled at
Circular Quay on 18 June, transmitting duplicate copies of the
petition and of the resolutions adopted at that meeting for
forwarding to the Queen. Both relate to the dismissal of Earl Grey
and responsible government. Included are: copy of Resolutions
passed on the public meeting on 18 June, including one praying
for Earl Grey's removal from Her Majesty's Council and another
that the Government should be administered "by Ministers chosen
from, and responsible to the Colonists themselves"; and a copy of
the petition of the Colonists of New South Wales embodying the
resolutions passed at that public meeting.

Also contains papers relating to an earlier public meeting, of
11 June, concerning the revival of Transportation. Included are a
letter from Robert Campbell, as Chairman of the meeting,
enclosing copies of the protest and resolutions of that meeting;
the Protest adopted at the public meeting of the inhabitants of
Sydney held on 11 June against the Transportation of British
Criminals to the Colony of New South Wales; and a copy of the
resolutions, in which it had been agreed that the "Local
Government" immediately send back the prisoners arrived in the
Hashemy to England, if necessary at the expense of the Colony.
The petitions and resolutions were forwarded to the Secretary of
State in the Governor's Despatch of 30 June 1849 (No.140).

Item [4/7331] comprises returns which generally record the name
of officer; date of appointment; by whom appointed and under
what instrument; period during which each held the situation in
the year aforementioned - from, to; and salary. Whether office
held in conjunction with any other; date of first appointment under
the Colonial Government; whether absent from the Colony; and
amount of other pay or allowances may also be recorded.
The 1831 return is the only one which records the names of
members of the Executive Council and of the Legislative Council
(as well the Clerk of the Councils). The other returns only record
such officers of the Department of the Councils as the Clerk of the
Councils, messengers, copying clerks, housekeeper and
doorkeeper. The final return is for the year ending 30 September
1843.
