that by this Act of Parliament, the foundation is laid upon which
institutions may gradually be raised, worthy of the great nation
of British origin which seems destined rapidly to rise up in the
Southern Hemisphere, and to spread our race and our language
and carry the power of the British Crown over the whole of the
vast territory of Australia.
Despatch No.14O of 23 September 1850: the Secretary of State
acknowledging receipt of the Governor's despatch of 12 April
1850, No.69, in which was forwarded a memorial signed by a
numerous and influential body of the colonists submitting various
alterations they conceived to be necessary in the Act for the Better
Government of Her Majesty's Australian Colonies (13 & 14 Vic
c.59). Earl Grey refers the Governor to Despatch No.125 of
30 August which explains his views on the topics addressed in the
memorial.
1851 Despatches
Box [4/1335] includes Despatch No.69 of 9 June 1851: the
Secretary of State acknowledging receipt of the Governor's
despatch, No.19 of 31 January 1851, reporting the Act for the
better Government of Her Majesty's Australian Colonies had been
received and that it had been proclaimed for the information of the
inhabitants of New South Wales.

The 1855 correspondence in [4/1665] includes letters to Members
of the Legislative Council acknowledging, accepting or encouraging
them to reconsider, resignation of their seats: John Dobie,
25 January 1855; William Bradley, 8 February; Edward Cox
5 April; and J R Holden 1 and 3 May 1855.
Supreme Court
Correspondence concerning ratification and enrolment of
Acts of Council, 1829-43
Items [5/1122] and [5/4757] contain office copies of
correspondence between the Governor, the Colonial Secretary, the
Clerk of the Council and the Judges of the Supreme Court. The
majority of letters received are covering letters enclosing acts for
routine ratification and enrolment. Letters sent acknowledge
receipt and enrolment.

By s.22 of the Act 9 Geo IV c.83 every law or ordinance of the
Legislative Council had to be submitted, within seven days, to the
Judges of the Supreme Court to be enrolled and recorded.
