Electoral rolls, 1842-90

Most of the lists are printed but a few are manuscript. The rolls
generally show the electoral district, ward or Police District, year,
name, nature of the qualification to vote and where the property
affording the qualification is situated. Occasionally the residence of
the elector is also given.

Electoral rolls are still being discovered among the Colonial
Secretary's Main series of letters received. The most recently
`found' Rolls have been extracted and placed in [4/10800] and
[4/10802]. Copies will be made of these, more recent, additions
and placed in State Records' reading rooms in due course.

This bundle includes a number of Proclamations relating to
electoral matters:
• numbered as 12, Proclamation of 27 February 1843 notifying in
pursuance of the Act of Council 6 Vic No.16 boundaries of the
counties forming Electoral Districts
• numbered as 13, Proclamation of 24 March 1843 notifying in
pursuance of Act of Parliament 5 & 6 Vic c.76 and of the Acts of
the Colonial Legislature 6 Vic No.3 and 16 respectively the
boundaries of the City of Sydney and various towns forming
Electoral Districts
• numbered as 17, Proclamation of 4 May 1843 notifying in
pursuance of Act of Council 6 Vic No.16 polling places for the
several and respective Electoral Districts returning members to
serve in the Legislative Council
• numbered as 23, Proclamation of 6 June notifying in pursuance
of Act of Council 6 Vic No.16 the appointment of the town of
Singleton in the County of Northumberland as a polling place
for the County of Durham Electoral District
• numbered as 32, Proclamation of 5 August 1843 appointing in
pursuance of Act of Council 6 Vic No.16 a Court consisting of a
President and four members for the trial of contested elections of members to serve in the Legislative Council (the Court for
the Trial of Disputed Elections)
• numbered as 33, Proclamation of 7 August 1843 notifying the
appointment of John Hubert Plunkett as a non-elective member
of the Legislative Council in lieu of Lieutenant Colonel Barney,
the Colonial Engineer, resigned
