1844 Councils - Legislative; CSIL 44/9390
CSIL 44/9390 is a copy of a petition from the Members of the
Legislative Council setting forth a Resolution adopted by them on
8 and 11 October 1844 concerning the elective franchise. "That it
is the opinion of this Council that the Elective Franchise ought to
be extended to all Leaseholders occupying land of not less than
£20 of Annual Value, and holding Leases of five years or upwards,
on condition of actual residence thereon for a period of at least six
months previously to the last registration of Electors in the
District."

The Legislative Council requested the Governor to transmit this
Resolution to the Secretary of State and to recommend that the
principle it contains be embodied in an Act to be passed by the
Imperial Parliament to amend the Act 5 & 6 Vic c.76. This was
done by Governor's Despatch No.249 of 1844.
1845 Electoral
A small bundle of papers comprising correspondence concerning
expenses in the preparation of the electoral lists and forwarding
declarations of Deputy Returning Officers, Henry Donnison and
Robert Rogers, and of the Clerk to the Deputy Returning Officer at
Wollombi, George Ormsly Weston.
1846 Election papers
A small bundle of papers comprising letters from the Returning
Officer for the District of Port Phillip returning the writ of election
for John Fitzgerald Leslie Foster vice Edward Curr, resigned; re the
resignation of W P Faithfull as Returning Officer for the County of
Argyle; and from Francis Mcarthur, the Returning Officer for
Argyle, returning the writ of election for William P Faithfull vice
William Bradley, retired.
1848 Elections
This bundle comprises correspondence relating to the
administration of elections of members of the Legislative Council.
The correspondence relates to such matters as appointment and
resignation of Returning Officers; appointment of Deputy
Returning Officers and/or Polling Clerks; acknowledgment of the
receipt of writs of election; reporting results of the election and
transmitting writs and voting papers; applications for
remuneration for services during the late election, or for the
payment of Deputy Returning Officers and Polling Clerks; requests
for payment of expenses; requests for proclamation of additional
polling places; preparation of electoral lists; requests for extension
of time for taking the poll; and protests against particular votes
cast.

Also included are declarations of Returning Officers, Deputy
Returning Officers, Polling Clerks and Revising Magistrates. Each of
these is a statement in which the officer accepts the office and
promises or declares to faithfully perform the duties of the position
to the best of his ability.
The writs of elections and the voting papers are not in this bundle.
