Port Phillip —
Duplicate Despatch No. 58 of 12 June 1845: the Secretary of State
acknowledging receipt of the Governor's despatch of 12 January
1845 (No.11), in which was enclosed a petition from the Members
of the Legislative Council praying for the entire separation of the
District of Port Phillip from New South Wales and to its erection
into a separate and independent Colony, and calling for a report of
the Governor's views and referral of this subject to the
consideration of the Executive Council to aid in the more complete
investigation of the question of separation.
Despatch No. 58
The subject to which the Petitioners refer is of grave
importance, and presents questions on which unaided by any
advice or information from yourself it is not in my power to
submit to the Queen any opinion as to the course which it
might be proper that Her Majesty should take.
