On the
16th June last I was with Constables Hooper and. Clifford.
on
No. 2 Platforxii at the Strathrield Railway station at about
10 p.m.
I said to accused. Freeman "What is your name?"
He replied "Davis".
I said "Where do you. live?"
"Shepperd Street Newtown".
Ha said
I said "There is no Sheppard
Street Ilextown".
He replied "I've not been living there
long and I don't know the streets very well".
I said fq
'believe your name is Henry Lewis".
He made a bolt and ran
alattut:aa platform towards Burwood, and along the railway
line about seventy or eighty yards, crossed over on to the
down slow line, and jumped over the railway fence into
Parnell Street.
He was overtaken by Constable Hooper. At
he was running along I heard him call out several times
"Stop or I'll shoot".
I could not see if he had anything
in his hand. After I had placed the handcuffs oP
constable Hooper said "What made you throw the revolver
over
the fence". Accused replied "It was not a revolver
it was
a piece of blue metal".
I said "How could you shoot anyone
with a piece of blue metal". Accused replied
"I meant
would shoot the metal at you". Hooper said "You turned
round and pointea a revolver at Le, and you slipped and
fell,
and. as you were fa11ir,6 you threw the revolver over the
fence" .
Accused replied n1 have nothing more to say".
We then took
him to the Strathfield lockup, where I searched him, and.
In
his pocket I found £a.17.1 a watch and chain, trinket, knife
k..,
and second class railway ticket - Strathfiald to Alloury.
I said "When did you purchase this ticket?"
He replied
"To-night". I said "What did ygu pay for it?"
He replied
"Half a sovereign".
I said "What made you throw your money
away when you were running along that street?"
He replied
uI caa not throw it
away it fell out of my pocket".
I said
to Hooper "Have a look and. see if you can find, this money
".
