WELLIGTON hAiRRY PEARCE ON OATH STATES
I am a Detective stationed at Sydney. On the 10th
June I saw accusea Tatham at about 1.30 p.m.

Victoria Park Racecourse near the entrance
gate.
He was
then driving a grey motor car.
I said. to hiia "Have you
found ;bar car?"

He said "No, this is a mate to the stolen
I said "I would like Vou to come to the Dete

Office with me I would like to t,et a statemen
t from you".
He said "I can't tell you anything, only that I left
My car
in the street while I went and had a shave
and when I came
out it was gone, I suppose the bloke that hz,s
got it will
ioring it back when he has done with it".
We then came intc
the Detective Offica.
We drove in in his car.
On our way
in, I said to him during a conversation we had.
°Do you know
a man named Norman Twiss employed at the Evel
eigh workshops?"
He said "No". That
trioon ihiit Tatham was detained at
tile Detective Office I said to him "I want
a statement of your
movements from the time you left the garage
this morning
until I picked you up at the races". Re then
made a statement
which I wrote down. At the finish I read
it over to him.
I said "Is that correct?"
He said "Ys". I said "Will you
sign it?"
He said "No, I won't sign any statement till
have seen rry solicitor". I took the
statement down in my own
writing. It was partly in answer to 114y
questions. (Witness
asked to read the statement. Mr. McIntosh
objects. Document
admittaa and marked Ex. 27).
The last part about losing his
car a month ago was made by Tatham the foll
owing day.
The next day was the llth June.
I asked. him to sign it the
First day. He was allowed to go home that
night. I saw him
