The primary function of the Guide to Shipping and Free Passenger Records
is to allow research workers to trace the arrival in and departure from the
colony of persons other than convicts (the latter being treated separately in
the Convict Guide), and the movement of vessels. However it should also prove
of value in other related areas of research.
The records listed in this Guide originated in a number of public offices
and the work is not intended to take the place of descriptive inventories of
the various record groups to which these records belong. Inventories will
continue to be published as and when resources permit.
