Free persons at own expense. Listed, usually by name
only, in the
various series in Section B, pages 36-45.
(b)
Immigrants. Listed, with considerable personal details, in the
various series in Section C, pages 45-62. Immigrants are also
sometimes listed by name in Reports of Vessels Arrived, July 1826 April 1859 (series 2, page 37) but more often the entry takes the
form "158 Immigrants".
(c)
Military Personnel. Officers are usually listed by name in Reports of
Vessels Arrived, July 1826 - April 1859 (series 2, page 37) but the
entry for the men usually takes the form "29 Rank and File of 80th
Regt". However additional information may be gained by searching
records filmed under the Australian Joint Copying Project in the
Public Record Office, London. Copies of these are held in the
Mitchell Library, the National Library and other State Libraries. Of
particular interest is the series War Office: Muster Books and Pay
Lists, 1732-1878 (W.O.12) which includes:
Maritime Services Board: Monthly returns of vessels arriving at and
departing from out-ports, 1950-51, 1953-54, 1958-59 (Kingswood

The returns record for each vessel, date of arrival, gross and nett
tonnage, master, pilotage certificate number, where from, where to,
and date of departure. The returns are signed by the pilot and
usually note amounts received in pilotage fees.
