PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
Page
The Guide to Shipping and Free Passenger Records was first published in
1977. Since then there have been a number of developments. The microfilming
of all the major series of records has been completed; the indexing of the
Immigrant Lists, 1840-96, and the input of the entire text on to a word
processing system to facilitate future updating has been accomplished by the
Archives Office staff under the direction of the Senior Archivist (Technical
Services), Mrs Christine Shergold, B.A., Dip.Lib., Dip.Arch.Admin.; and a
substantial body of records relating to the registration of seamen has been
accessioned and processed by the Assistant Senior Archivist, Processing, Mr
Michael Allen, B.A., Dip.Lib., greatly expanding this section of the Guide.
The purpose and format of the Guide is very similar to the first edition,
the primary object being to assist researchers in tracing the arrival in and
departure from the colony of persons other than convicts (the latter being
treated separately in the Convict Guide), and the movement of vessels. In
addition, there are sections dealing with Seamen, the Registration of Vessels,
and Shipwrecks.
Both the original Guide and this revised edition were prepared by Mrs
Dawn Troy, B.A., Dip.Lib. Considerable assistance with the revision was
provided by Mrs Christine Shergold.
