8 | THE OLD DIOCESAN
TOP ACHIEVER
Kaspar Holm (2023S) was
the top matriculant, with a
96% aggregate, 8 distinctions
and 100% for German. We
had some questions for him
Were there any particular challenges
in your matric year? The biggest
difficulty was finding the correct
balance between academic work
and other passions of mine, such
as music-making, fly-fishing, and
other school sports.
Your favourite subject ? Music.
The syllabus is structured with
a big emphasis on the practical
aspect of music. This allowed
me to spend time pursuing a big
passion of mine: playing the violin
and performing. The teachers at
the music department are also
truly phenomenal people and
mentors, and the John Peake
Music School became kind of
a second home to me.
Who was your most influential
teacher? I was blessed with
fantastic teachers throughout
my school years, but my Music
History teacher, Mr Wrensch, and
Maths teacher, Mr Vamvadelis,
stand out. Their unique approach
to teaching, stressing the importance
of learning more than just the syllabus
and expanding general knowledge
in their various fields of expertise,
has made them influential figures
in my life.
What are you doing this year?
In line with broadening my scope of
the world, I’ve decided to take a year
off to see new things, learn new skills,
and experience new experiences. A
focus is doing construction work on
a little holiday house my family owns
on the West Coast. What happens
thereafter is yet to be decided!
