PICTORIAL
Mark Shuttleworth (b. 1973)
When Mark Shuttleworth gave his speech as departing head boy
in 1991, he urged the boys to take advantage of the opportunities
at Bishops and dream big. Then he went out into the world and
followed his own advice. He spotted the opportunities that the
nascent internet presented, merged the two disciplines of which
he was a master – IT and finance – and built Thawte, a company
that pioneered digital certificates and online security. In 1999,
he sold it to Verisign for a reported $575-million, and in 2002
he used some of that money to become the first African in space,
where he spent eight days aboard the International Space Station.
Today he remains a major thought leader in the tech industry.
Justice Howie (b. 1938)
Bishops has produced an array of brilliant legal minds throughout
its history, from Chief Justice of Southern Rhodesia Sir Murray
Bisset (1927-1931), to Chief Justice of the Union of South Africa
John Curlewis (1936-1938), to our contemporary jurist President
of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa Craig Howie
(2003-2008). Howie features here both because he has made
significant contributions to the development of South African law,
and because he is Patron-elect of the OD Union. That the Union
has in its service a man of such calibre bodes well for us all.
