PODCAST NOTIFICATIONS
ODs – and the ODU – are getting in on the podcast trend.
Jeremy Ryall (2014F), a director at the digital sports marketing
company Moonsport, was tasked with finding a suitable venue to host a
high-profile rugby podcast show. Having worked for the ODU, he had an
ideal one up his sleeve: the Mitre. The weekly show, Boks Office, featuring
Hanyani Shimange, Schalk Burger and Jean de Villiers, emerged from
a pilot developed during the 2023 Rugby World Cup. Jeremy’s team will
now produce 30 episodes for World Rugby in 2024, covering rugby across
the globe, from Sevens and Six Nations to The Rugby Championship
and outgoing Springbok tour. The first episodes began filming at the
Mitre in February 2024, and the show can be viewed on RugbyPass
TV at rugbypass.tv or on the RugbyPass YouTube channel.
Also in February, Nick Dall (1999B) launched the Secret History podcast
with Matthew Blackman. Leveraging off the success of their books on
South African history (see p66), the first episode featured a shipwreck
off Cape Town in 1647, irreverently introducing “the real founding fathers
of colonial South Africa”. Find the show on all major podcast services.
For those interested in podcasting, it’s worth tracking down Jonathan
Warncke (1998B) on LinkedIn for the inside track. Jonathan has been
positioning himself as the guru of local podcasting for some time, and
was recently appointed MD of the South African Podcasters Guild.
MC Pammer.
Meet the MC
Glen Biderman-Pam (2004F) is not
just an award-winning commercial
director and co-founder of Panther
Punch Productions; he was due to MC
the Bishops 175 OD Dinner in March
2024. As honoured as he may be, we
suspect he will handle the pressure
of the occasion well, given that he’s
produced multiple viral content videos;
had a starring role in the Showmax
comedy series Tali’s Diary; and hosted
The Great South African Bake Off
in 2023 to critical acclaim (despite
having “learnt absolutely nothing
about baking during the shoot”).
More recently, Glen was enjoying
success in Amazon Prime’s Last One
Laughing, hosted by Trevor Noah,
which debuted locally in February.

A DREAM COME TRUE
Since his interview with us in 2021 (Issue 8), Will Linley’s
(2019K) dream career in music has soared. Headlining at Plett
Rage and Ballito Live in December, he followed it up at the
Calabash in Cape Town in early 2024. His European Magic Tour
has sold out in Dublin, London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Paris,
Cologne and Berlin, and he has amassed 40+ million streams
across platforms, with 950,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
The lifelong dedication of Richard
Cock (1966O) to spreading a love
of music has been widely recognised
and celebrated, with various roles
including choral trainer, conductor,
and music director of the National
Symphony Orchestra. In January,
the Anglican Church of Southern
Africa acknowledged his substantial
contributions to church music,
admitting both Richard and his wife
Sue to the Order of Simon of Cyrene,
which recognises the outstanding
contributions of lay people to the
church. Congratulations to Richard
for this rare honour.
