N
ow that The Old Diocesan
is an annual publication,
delivered in time for Founder’s
Day, production of the magazine
always coincides with the busiest
time of year for the noble souls who
keep the OD Union running. There
is inevitably a lot going on. This year,
however, as Bishops marks its 175th
year, there is a lot going on.
The OD Dinner, to be held at Kelvin
Grove in March – where this bumper
issue will make its debut – looks set
to be the largest in many years, quite
likely since 1999. As we were going to
press, our events co-ordinator Dedry
Weich was rustling up another three
tables to include 30 more ODs from the
waiting list – which means we’ll have
close to 400 people attending.
Our communications manager Lynn
Swanevelder was dealing with a flood
of emails and WhatsApps – many to
do with the impending AGM, including
the appointment of Justice Craig
Howie as our Patron-elect. See p15.
Meanwhile, the 175 Museum
Project, the refurbishment of the
museum on the ground floor of
the Mitre, gathers pace. The plan
is to display the broad history of
Bishops from 1849 to 1999, then
zoom in to showcase (literally) the
last 25 years to 2024. The intention
is to develop the displays organically
in the coming years.
OD Ambassador Paul Murray,
besides being incredibly busy, is well
pleased with all the activity. “The
fact that this great school is entering
the 175th year, in which students,
staff, ODs and all who enjoy links
to it can celebrate its significant
existence in Rondebosch and Cape
Town, is mirabile dictu,” he says. Which
is to say, it’s marvellous to relate!
