As part of his work as a marine conservation photographer, Jean
Tresfon (1992F), left, conducts regular flights around the Cape coast in
his Autogyro MTO Sport gyrocopter, an open-cockpit two-person aircraft
perfectly suited to aerial photography. He is used to flying and shooting
at the same time, often controlling the aircraft with his knees to free up
his hands for the camera. Jean’s usual route around the Peninsula takes
him from Blouberg to Cape Point, then to Muizenberg and back across the
southern suburbs, often flying over his alma mater en route to Morningstar
Airfield. Looking down on this particular day, he noticed the Mitre and the
hockey astro turf – facilities that did not exist during his time at Bishops.
While the midday light was a bit harsh, he felt compelled to take a snap
or two on his way past – and we felt it appropriate to include one of them
here, given our focus on OD pilots in this issue, on p28.
