news from the cricket and rugby fields
e start with a young
record-breaker and
brand-new OD. Having
made history at the age of 17 as the
youngest South African to score a
senior List-A century on debut, for
WP, Jono Bird (2019G) opened the
batting for South Africa in the U19
Cricket World Cup played on home
soil in January and February. Jono
was one of the few young Proteas
to make an impression in an
otherwise disappointing campaign,
scoring 179 runs in six matches
at a strike rate of 101. He has
subsequently been playing oneday cricket for the Cobras.
Although Jono didn’t make it
to the U19 final, one OD did:
Adrian Holdstock (1988O), as
umpire. Adrian also umpired the
