In these transformational times, Bishops is dependent on the
Bishops Trust to safeguard its future from within, while it invests
in the VUSA Academy to build a greater society – and ultimately
safeguard its future from the outside. Nikki Matthews explains
Architect’s rendering of the proposed Frank Reid Cricket Precinct.
ishops is now invested
in two Trusts. Although
the missions and goals of
the Bishops Trust and the VUSA
Academy are vastly different,
they are inextricably linked by
their impact in South Africa.
The Bishops Trust was born
out of a need to build the Bishops
community. The Bishops Trust
175 Campaign was launched
to raise funds for much-needed
Capital Development, as well
as for bursaries that will enable
talented learners who don’t have
the required financial means to
access an excellent education.
By contrast, as you can read
on p52, the VUSA Trust was
born out of a need to service
the greater community of Cape
Town and thus South Africa.
“Pockets of excellence should
be replicated instead of dumbing
them down,” says scenario planner
Clem Sunter. This is crucial in
determining South Africa’s future;
hence the mission to replicate
the excellence of Bishops
in deserving communities.
Leadership guru and former
CEO of Business Leadership South
Africa Bonang Mohale agrees that
institutions of excellence are key
in the future of South Africa – and
as guest speaker at a Bishops Trust
fundraiser last year, he reiterated
the school’s responsibility to share
that excellence and to use its
privilege to provide opportunity
to uplift others. “How can you
speak of the sea to a frog that
has never left its pond?” he asked.
While our boys are in our
care, it is our job to nurture
and educate them, so that
when they walk out of the
Memorial Gates as adults,
they leave also as innovators
and change-makers, ready to put
their mark on the world through
industry and philanthropy.
The Bishops Trust is a registered
PBO and can thus issue Section
18a tax receipts to all bona fide
donations in South Africa.
As of February 2020, more than
R51 million has been raised for the
Bishops 175 Campaign. We’ve made
excellent progress, but we’re still
a long way off the R300 million the
Bishops Trust has targeted. Look
out for information on specific
Capital projects in future issues.
