PSMC Brings the Latest Technology to Pagosa Springs
New Ambulance
HVAC Project
In November of 2020, PSMC purchased a new
ambulance, which is specially designed and
equipped for long patient transports in difficult
terrain and adverse weather. The ambulance
includes additional safety modifications and
a power lift to aid in loading and unloading
patients. The ambulance safety measures were
designed by PSMC EMS staff to ensure the
enhanced safety of patients and staff traveling in
challenging conditions. PSMC was awarded an
Emergency Medical & Trauma Services grant from
the Colorado Department of Public Health and
Environment in the amount $104,462, which paid
for 50% of the budgeted cost of the ambulance. In
addition, PSMC’s Foundation was awarded three
additional grants (summarized on page 19) that
helped pay for the cost of the ambulance.
In the fall of 2020, PSMC completed an HVAC
(heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system
replacement. The new HVAC system improves
PSMC’s operating room climate control and air
quality, and has increased the hospital’s surgical
capacity, as the hospital’s two operating rooms now
can be used simultaneously. The system enhanced
infection prevention by adding two more negative
air pressure rooms in the Emergency Department,
improving cooling/venting for Oncology,
and reducing energy costs. PSMC was awarded
two grants from the Colorado Division of Local
Government in the amount of $911,000, which paid
for 50% of the budgeted cost for the HVAC project
and the amount of $119,035, which paid for the
negative air pressure rooms.
Diagnostic Imaging
During 2020, PSMC completed the work to bring a new
MRI to the hospital. The new MRI, a Siemens Magnetom
Altea, will be operational at PSMC by the end of 2021
and is expected to serve the needs of the community for
up to twenty years. The new MRI should enhance clinical
care with dedicated coils for each body part and it will
also improve patient comfort with a larger opening for
patients. In addition, PSMC’s Foundation is raising funds
and pursuing grants to acquire new 3D mammography.
