Welcome back to the Pain Relief Foundation Annual Lecture
Prof David Bennett
This years lecture was slightly different than previous years as we had the opportunity to
honour two eminent figures in the world of pain.
A short presentation about their life and work was given before the lecture by a fellow
academic or clinician.
The life and work of Stephen McMahon who was a Sherrington Professor of Physiology in
Wolfson CARD - presentation by Professor Anthony Dickenson, Professor of
Neuropharmacology at University College, London.
The life and work of Professor William Campbell who was Secretary and then a President of
the British Pain Society -presentation by Dr Arun Baskar, Consultant in pain medicine in
London.
The annual lecture titled 8 Using a stratified medicine approach to improve understanding,
diagnosis and treatment of Neuropathic Pain9 was given by Professor David Bennett Professor
of Neurology and Neurobiology at the University of Oxford.
Student Essay Competiton Winners
The aim of this competition is to raise awareness of chronic pain amongst all student
health professionals. Each year we have a fantastic response with the winners receiving a
