The committee has also formed
strong ties with the wider
Council, assisting members with
planning, buying and selling on site
as well as access to a local solicitor
who often provides free services
for members.
Negotiating discounts with local
traders has also proved to be a
popular benefit for neighbours too.
Members also step in when
neighbours have difficulty managing
day-to-day. More alarming were
instances of residents being
discharged home without the
correct level of formal support
and often no local family to help
out. Working with Social Services,
Therapists, Community Nurses and
local Doctors surgeries, they were
able to access more appropriate Christmas 2017
care and ensure the safety and
well-being of their neighbours.

After much building of trust, one
of the first things that came to
light was the number of people
who were not aware of extra
monies they were entitled to. In
one year alone, they managed
to help fourteen residents gain
access to Attendance Allowance
which provided them valuable, non
means-tested additional income.
