Rebuilding Lives
THOUSANDS OF OLDER PEOPLE ACROSS THE FORMER SOVIET UNION ARE LIVING
IN DILAPIDATED HOMES. BADLY DESIGNED AND CONSTRUCTED TO START WITH,
MANY SOVIET APARTMENT BLOCKS HAVE BEEN NEGLECTED FOR DECADES.
POVERTY-STRICKEN, LONELY AND FRAIL OLDER PEOPLE OFTEN HAVE NO MEANS OF
REPAIRING AND IMPROVING THEIR ACCOMMODATION AND AS THEIR HEALTH GETS
WEAKER, HOUSING CONDITIONS DETERIORATE.
World Jewish Relief’s
Home Repairs programme
enables older people to
stay independent, lowers
risks of disease and injury
and contributes to the
overall improvement of
their quality of life.
Working in Ukraine,
Moldova and Georgia,
the programme replaces
windows, doors and
installs insulation to make
homes warm and dry.
Uneven floors are replaced,
making it easier to move
around. Bathrooms and
kitchens are repaired, hot
running water installed
and shower cabins replace
bath tubs.
We aim to repair 3,500
homes over the next three
years at an average cost of
£2,000 per home.
LEONID VINOKUROV
Leonid is 77 years old, and
lives with his wife Olga
and their cat Shira. He
worked as a scientist and
in his retirement has really
embraced his Jewish faith.
The couple’s two children
long since moved away, and
have their own families to
look after.

However familiar Leonid’s
story may sound, the reality
of his situation is desperate.
He suffers from an acute
cardiovascular condition, for
which he has to buy a lot of
expensive medication. He
and his wife survive on just
£75 a month, meaning they
cannot afford to make urgent
repairs to their small home.
Leonid’s local Hesed
stepped in to provide
winter fuel to Leonid and
his wife, and now World
Jewish Relief plan to carry
out extensive repairs on
their dilapidated home. The
drafty windows will all be
replaced, and the kitchen
and bathroom will be
replaced, ensuring Leonid’s
discomfort can be eased
and that he and his wife
may live out their years in
comfort and dignity.
“We truly never imagined
that such good people exist.
People that want to help
other people. For this we
are truly grateful for their
kindness. We look forward
to our repairs and our new
comfortable home.”
