Galina once lived in a
thriving Jewish area,
now she is the only Jew
left in the vicinity. She
ekes out her lonely days
by attempting to recall
and record the Yiddish
songs her mother taught
her when she was a child.
Sometimes she rides
around all day on local
trams just to kill time.
Although surrounded by
neighbours, Galina can
feel desperately lonely.
She sits in the courtyard
outside her building for
hours in the hope someone
might exchange a kind
word or offer her a cup of
tea, but sadly this is rarely
forthcoming.
Each week Galina makes a
pot of borscht and rations
it out so that it will last for
every meal, if not, she will
simply go hungry as her
pension does not stretch
far enough to cover bills,
medicine and food.
For a long time Galina felt
entirely alone but World
Jewish Relief is working to
change her life for good.
We’re providing vital
home repairs to combat
the damp and have made
sure Galina has essential
medical equipment
such as a blood pressure
monitor and new glasses,
the latter enabling her to
properly see the notebook
in which she transcribes
her Yiddish songs. And
we’ve persuaded Galina
to join our ‘Warm Homes’
programme which brings
isolated older people
together for some muchneeded company. The
event includes transport,
treats and often a craft
session or interesting
talk. It has transformed
Galina’s life, rebuilding her
confidence and self-esteem
and ensuring she has new
friends.
In February 2019 Galina
turns 75 and thanks to your
support, this year she will
be warm, happy and able to
celebrate with new friends.
“I remember when Galina
first came to the warm
home. She sat apart in
corner and didn’t speak
to anyone. Now she is
a completely different
person, if I don’t see her
in person we speak over
the phone.”.
Valentina.
“I’m grateful to everyone
in London, thank you so
much!”
