The wire. The blood. The tears.
Sensing that the puppy is running out of time, she reaches to touch the wire on its’ mouth, but it
fused to its face.
“This can’t be. How did it survive?” asked Santiago.
Matias, jumps back in horror, shocked at the merciless horror inflicted on this defenseless puppy.
Santiago studies the puppy, his eyes well with tears. He looks to Elena and back at the puppy.
Juan, beholding this puppy, says “Who ---- did this to you?”
Elena focusing on the puppy, its brown eyes peering back at her, cringing from its wounds.
“I am going to take care of you. I promise. With all my heart,” petting her softly as the puppy
looks solemnly at her.
“Let’s get her back to the restaurant. I have some wire cutters,” commanded Santiago as he
wrapped her in his apron. “Hold her”
“I’ll get her some water – I don’t know how much time she has.”
Matias picks up his tray again and dashes ahead of them. “BEST TORTAS AND ENCHILADAS IN
ALL OF GUADALAJARA --- COMING THRU!” stopping four taxi drives and a bus driver as they
cross Donato street.
“Lay her down here,” motions Santiago to the bar as he hurries for his scissors.
“Ok – but hurry—she is in pain,” responds Elena.
“I have to cut it very – very, very carefully – or clip her skin,” as he begins to cut the wires one
by one and slowly removing them from its face. Blood drips onto Elena’s hands.
The puppy does not whimper nor take her eyes off of Elena. As soon as the wires come off, the
puppy releases its fear and begins to shake. Elena cradling her, sending waves of devotion to calm the
suffering, little puppy.
“Here,” says Santiago - pouring some cool water in a tin bowl.
Elena holds the little puppy - as she drinks every last drop.
