Alberto, smelling the food, methodically slipped behind Estella, gave his official answer, “Let me
help you with that,” so he could get preferred enchilada status.
“Can you get her present? It’s heavier” said Estella earnestly, putting the food down on the
kitchen counter after walking up three flights of stairs. “It’s in the car.”
Alberto, unwavering with his dedication to the food, “Is that enchiladas?” and dashed down the
three flights of stairs to bring up a big box, covered in icy purple wrapping paper and lavender bow –
Alma’s favorite color, and leave it under the dining table.
O-O-O-O-O-hhhhhhhhh. So lovely,” said Fabiola, looking at Elena’s special delivery.
“What is it?” asked Estella.
“It’s a Golden letter,” said Alma with conviction.
“A-a-a-a-h--- so what does it say?” asked Estella, with flaming curiosity.
“It’s my first word: Courage,” said Elena joyfully showing to all of them.
“Do you like my new dress?” said Alma, twirling around in her lavender wrap dress, puffing her
hair and quickly adding some Raspberry wine lipstick.
“We Love it,” said Ramona.
“It goes with your eyes,” confirmed Fabiola, looking at the total shape of the dress.
“I’ve got to have one,” said Estella, “Do one for me in red? No make that two, one in blue.”
“I ordered one first! Here is the material,” said Esperanza, handing Alma a black, soft, cotton
material.
Ramona, Estella, Esperanza, and Fabiola banded together around her – leaving little distance
apart in their group hug for her fifty-ninth birthday.
“Happy Birthday Alma -- from all of us,” says Ramona.
My sister could have done better”, said Esperanza confidently.
“No!” snapped Fabiola, “Leave your sister out of this—It’s Alma’s birthday!”
RING, RING.
