Elena looked at Alma’s phone, “Please, Please -- can I answer it? Its Dr. Julio.”
“Yes,” then mouthing to Esperanza – “no she couldn’t!” retorted Alma.
“Dr. Julio? It’s my Abuelita’s birthday! Can my puppy come home? How is she? Has she eaten?
She has been there a whole day – she has to be better!”
Alma came up to the phone, Elena putting it on speaker.
“Alma? Happy Birthday! All the best to you. I am afraid my news is not very good.”
“She is very weak. Her tests came back abnormal. Her kidneys are having trouble – recovering.”
Elena, slowly comprehending the pain her puppy is in finally asks, “Will she get well? “
“I am not sure Elena. It depends if her kidneys can start working again. She did urinate last night
but has not since.”
“Did she eat anything?” asked Alma.
He hesitated.
“We gave her some protein intravenously and we are going to try giving her some food today.
She has been through a lot the first months of her life. If her kidneys do not start working, they will burst
and all the bile will go into her body –
He hesitated, not wanting to deliver this bad news.
“--and die a slow, agonizing death.”
“My puppy, my puppy….” cried Elena.
Dr. Julio responded with a soft-spoken kindness for Elena, “The next six hours are critical – to
her kidney function and recovery. We will know if she is going to make it after the next six hours.”
Elena looks up at her grandma. “Can we say a quick prayer?”
“Yes, of course we can,” added Alma.
Dear Heavenly Father,
I am so scared for my puppy. She has fought so hard. Please heal her
And make her well.
