“Thank you - my darling daughter,” said Alma, tearing up again.
“I wish you the best birthday ever. Did you get the money I sent you?”
“Yes – I did.”
“I love you so much. We will be together soon.”
“Mom, we are coming -- to convince Mrs. Fusseltoes to reverse your denial.”
“Denial? Are you getting deported Carmen?” asked Esperanza accusingly.
“No. I have 30 days to answer this.”
“Oh. No. Not this,” said Fabiola tearfully. “I feel like a stake just went thru my heart.”
“Why doesn’t Carmen come home? The three of you could stay at my ranch,” added Esperanza.
“We don’t want to stay at your ranch!” countered Elena.
“And why not Elena? What could be so bad about staying with me? You would have your
mother once again. Give up this crazy dream. This American dream!” retorted Esperanza.
“Every day I sketch out dresses --- on paper and cardboard. And I dream that my mother is
overlooking my designs on the kitchen table and grandma is cooking. And one day I will be accepted to
the Fashion Institute in California.”
“You are an American living in Mexico, pursing the American dream,” arguing Esperanza.
“Let her live her dream,” replied Ramona.
“You want her spinning her life away on such nonsense – no thanks! She would be better off
finding a man to marry,” contended Esperanza – her voice escalating.
Ramona frowns directly at Esperanza and gives this rebuttal, “She could form a partnership with
a good man and go further. That is what I did.”
“I think it is ok to follow your dreams – I just don’t want to speculate the nest egg my husband
left me,” commented Estella.
