Our world is not all number crunching
and political analysis; a part of the job
is “marketing” – meeting investors and
members of the press to reiterate our
investment process, share our world
view and, now, to introduce Oisín.
This afternoon sees us venture from our
offices on The Strand in London down
south of the river to meet with a journalist,
who is keen to know more about Europe’s
various elections. After a quick briefing
in the pub opposite the publication’s
offices – a very restrained mint tea for
Oisín and me – we’re escorted into their
video studio to record a short segment
on the sea of opportunities we’re seeing
right now.

Within one of my portfolios, the Liontrust
European Enhanced Income fund, I have
the ability to write covered call options.
These sound complicated but essentially
we can use these options to swap some
of the potential capital gain from a rising
share price for an extra slice of income
over a specified time period.
Since I moved to Liontrust in July 2016,
the risk/reward trade-off often hasn’t
been right for me to write these calls.
After running the numbers, checking my
key indicators, and a quick chat with
Oisín and our trading desk, I decide the
amount we would get paid for foregoing
some of the upside is not sufficient,
given my optimistic short-term outlook for
markets, and continue to bide my time.
Friday
Having undertaken two of the top 10
“most stressful life events” last year –
having a new baby and switching jobs
– I’m now going for the third; moving
house. As we’re renting our current home,
the paintbrush beckons on Saturday
morning as I attempt to paint over my
toddler’s crayon masterpiece, which has
adorned the hallway for the past year.
The afternoon and Sunday promise to be
full of heavy lifting – for me rather than
the toddler and the newborn. Luckily,
we’ve not far to go – we’ve bought the
cottage next door.
