Winter Rep 24 Digital Playbill - Flipbook - Page 3
was commissioned by Writers Theatre, Glencoe Illinois and adapted by Marilyn
Campbell and Curt Columbus. The play had its world premiere on May 13.
2003.
Our journey may feel kaleidoscopic in nature, a roller coaster ride as the
characters of Por昀椀ry and Sonia morph into Sonia’s father Marmeladov,
Raskolnikov’s mother Pulcheria, Alyona the pawn broker and her sister
Lizaveta. With each encounter we peer into the maze of his mind, his heart, his
soul.
We are presented with Raskolnikov’s hypothesis for the justi昀椀cation of a
criminal act. We gain insight into the impact of his isolation, his living in
poverty, his self-examination of Faith, his guilt coupled with his compassion—
all of which are juxtaposed within the framework of each character’s morality
vs. society’s ethics.
We vacillate between the Present and the Past, Reality, Delusion, Memory,
Dreams as Raskolnikov wrestles with the psychological reverberations sparked
by murder.
Por昀椀ry’s “free form” art of investigation is considered by many to be a
modern day Columbo who serves as our guide as he steers Raskolnikov toward
a confession.
Rooted in her devotion to God and her limitless well of compassion, Sonia
enlightens as she leads Raskolnikov on a path toward forgiveness and
redemption.
“He’s like a moth, circling a 昀氀ame, he won’t have anywhere else to go. He’s
brooding and he’s worrying and getting all tangled up in himself. He just keeps
circling and circling that 昀氀ame…until…” –Por昀椀ry Petrovich
Will Raskolnikov confess?
Does Forgiveness and Redemption lie in wait on the far side of the 昀椀nish
line?
