2018 PN Restoration Flipbook - Flipbook - Page 27
SUMMARY
It was Kyle Franz’s goal to exhibit different periods of Ross’s evolving Pinehurst style - between the 1910s and 1940s - on every course. From Pinehurst No. 2’s
wiregrass/sandy-hard pan areas on each side of the fairways to Mid Pines’ narrower exacting corridors to Pine Needle’s large ridges and landing zones, Ross touched
every part of the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area and forever changed golf course architecture.
The scope and scale of the Pine Needles restoration lasted two years. Fairways remain wide for subsequent tournaments and the holes play lengths where players
hit the same irons Ross intended. The holes were almost always intended to play longer than one might suspect. It will provide options for the USGA at both the
2019 U.S. Senior Women’s Open and the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open Championships.
