He studied the work of Donald Ross in his off-hours and eventually became
a Ross expert.
In his lifetime, Donald Ross designed and renovated more than 400 courses
around the world. He grew up playing Royal Dornoch in Scotland. And he
apprenticed under four-time British Open champ “Old” Tom Morris at
St. Andrews before returning to Dornoch as a player and club maker.
When he originally designed Pine Needles, Ross was working in the Philadelphia
region – on Aronimink, St. Davids and York – so it’s no surprise that many of
his classic holes are reminiscent of the Philadelphia School of Design.
When he met Kelly Miller, President and CEO of Pine Needles, a partnership
was forged.
“Kyle’s attention to detail is remarkable,” says Miller. “He gives you great insight
into Ross’s thinking, why he did this or did that. He’s also very keen on watching
people play the course, seeing where they hit the ball and where it rolls out.”
