The charming Georgian-style Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club was built in 1921 as a private club for prominent
businessmen. During World War II, the elegant club was shut down and repurposed as a base for military personnel. In early 1944, seasoned hoteliers Frank and Masie Cosgrove took over operations and lovingly restored
the property to its former glory. Their son-in-law, professional golfer Julius Boros, went into business with them
in 1953 to expand their golf operations. And, for a brief time, they partnered with Peggy Kirk and Warren Bell
to purchase Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club. When the Cosgroves had the opportunity to purchase Mid Pines,
they sold full ownership of Pine Needles to the Bells. Forty years later, the Bell-Miller-McGowen family was able
to purchase Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club as well.
While the resort has been updated over the years with all the modern conveniences, the Mid Pines course remains
just as Ross built it — perfectly carved from the natural landscape. It challenges your short game, demands strategic thought and often requires you to use every club in your bag. It will earn a place in your heart as surely as
it earned Golf Magazine’s 2013 Best U.S. Resort Renovation and Restoration of the Year.
“Give me some slightly rolling terrain and sandy soil,
and I’ll give you the best courses.” —Donald J. Ross
