Meticulously restored in 2021, the 6,500-yard Southern Pines Golf Club is a local treasure. Donald Ross’s strategic
approach shots challenge beginners and experts alike. Its natural beauty and gently rolling terrain make it difficult to
tell where design ends and nature begins. And an unexpected Lost Hole – connecting hole #4 to hole #15 for a
9-hole loop back to the clubhouse – provides a delightful opportunity to play an optional sand green like the ones
Ross played in the late 1930s.
This charming Ross course has received its fair share of fame. In the 1930s, Fox Movietone filmed a competition
between the top four women golfers of the day. And, in 1946, Sam Snead beat Ben Hogan in an unforgettable
Southern Pines Open, setting a course record that would last for decades. Three-time major champion Tommy
Armour once worked at the club. And PGA and U.S. Open Champion Julius Boros was the club accountant.
Today, the Southern Pines Golf Club is a local icon, revered by the locals and beloved by everyone who plays it. It’s
a fun, compelling proper golf course – from the hands of a Scottish master.
“The development of municipal golf is...the greatest
step ever taken to make it the game of the people, as
it should be.” — Donald J. Ross
