Enabling Change from Country to Local Levels - Flipbook - Page 2
INTRODUCTION &
CONTEXT
In pursuit of a global plastics framework, it is imperative to
establish mechanisms that facilitate country -and local-level
implementation and execution.
Plastic Oceans recognizes the significance of supporting and
empowering local communities due to their heightened
susceptibility to the deleterious effects of plastic pollution. This issue
is particularly acute in developing countries in the Global South,
where plastic literacy and waste management infrastructure may be
insufficient.
Enabling local communities to implement of context-specific
solutions is vital. Demonstrating the effectiveness of community-led
initiatives and sustainable practices can inspire others to act,
creating pressure on governments and corporations to prioritize the
reduction of plastic waste.
Managing plastic pollution involves multiple stakeholders, each with
a unique role to play. Understanding the responsibilities, roles, and
accountability of these stakeholders is crucial in defining
mechanisms to enable local-level execution and achieving global
objectives. An effective flow of knowledge and active constructive
dialogues can promote sustainable consumer practices, optimize
waste management systems, and facilitate policy changes at the
local and national levels.
The following report aims to delineate the roles and positions of
stakeholders in the flow of information to facilitate local-level
execution and promote productive local-national dialogues to
overcome barriers to change.
