Study Skills in Practice - Retrieval Strategies
This example of a Retrieval Map was designed for students who had recently
covered the water cycle in Geography. The questions act as memory triggers.
What are the 4
stages of the water
cycle?
What happens
during evaporation?
Sketch a basic diagram
of the water cycle.
The Leitner System is a form of self-quizzing or testing with flashcards that
combines retrieval practice with spaced practice. You will need flashcards
and five small containers to hold the cards. These can be small cardboard or
plastic boxes. If you are unable to access boxes then folders will work fine too.
Whatever you decide to use, make sure you clearly label them one to five.
Firstly, you need to create your flashcards. The number of questions you put on
the card will depend on the content of each subject. You will need your books
and notes for this, and you may also want to consult with your teacher - just
to check you are on the correct path with your questions. Answers should be
written on the reverse of each card.

Show What You Know is an activity that requires at least one other person.
The aim is to retrieve what you know by telling or teaching someone about
it. This person could be a friend, classmate or family member. You should
challenge yourself to explain your thinking and elaborate on what you have
been learning. If possible, ask the person to question and probe you about the
details. A family member is less likely to know what to ask so you might give
them your textbook or notes so that they can steer the questioning.
If carrying out this activity with a classmate,
they might be in a better position to ask
appropriate questions as they too will have
covered the material in class. You could also
teach each other.
All question cards start in box one. Answer the questions on the first card
correctly and put the card into box two, otherwise it stays in box one. Answer
the questions on a card in box two correctly and it moves into box three.
Answer the questions on a card in box three correctly and it moves into box
four and repeat for box five. Every time you get questions wrong you must drop
this card down a box. Be honest, otherwise this activity is fruitless.
Go through box one cards frequently, box two cards a little less frequently,
boxes three and four less frequently again and box five least frequently. You
will see in the diagram below that we have given guidance as to when you
might target each box of questions using the science of spaced practice.
The more you get the answers correct, the more confident you will become and
the more you embed information in long-term memory. Don’t forget to make
the questions challenging! One more tip – occasionally shuffle the cards in
each box so that you vary the order of your topics and questions. Mixing up
the order (known as interleaving) will ensure your brain is being more effortful.

Show What You Know is a quick and easy way to consolidate what you are
learning and establish any gaps in knowledge. It requires few if any additional
resources and is a great way of involving other people in your learning. It will
make you feel more confident about the material and extremely proud of your
efforts. We would encourage you to engage in this activity on a regular basis
– after a while it will become a very effective study habit and you might create
your own study group.
