WALK in the FOOTSTEPS
OF A HERO
Throughout Maryland, numerous
museums, trails, and tours tell the
inspiring stories of freedom seekers who
risked their lives to escape slavery.
Many of those brave men, women, and children
came directly through Howard County in search
of refuge. The Howard County Center of African
American Culture gives visitors the opportunity
to walk in the footsteps of Harriet Tubman, who
shepherded hundreds of people to freedom
as a fearless abolitionist and conductor on the
Underground Railroad. The museum’s curated
Simpsonville Freetown Legacy Trail celebrates the
history of Simpsonville, a destination for many on
the journey out of bondage, and commemorates the
role of Harriet Tubman as the “Moses of her people.”
Sites on the trail include Middle Patuxent Creek and
Locust Cemetery, where Tubman and
others are said to have hidden from
slave raiders during their treacherous
journey northward to a new life.
