COLUMBIA
Known as the Safest City in Columbia for five consecutive years, the Best Place
to Live in Maryland for People with Disabilities, and the Happiest Place to Live
in Maryland, Columbia is the place where opportunity grows. From the unique
villages to thriving Downtown Columbia, there is something for people of all ages
and abilities. Columbia is also home to Freetown Farm, which was featured on
the TODAY show for its innovative approach to blending the past, while teaching
sustainable practices for the future.
ELKRIDGE
Our oldest settlement, Elkridge offers visitors the opportunity to learn about its
rich history and historic sites – from Belmont Manor and the Elkridge Furnace Inn
to the Thomas Viaduct (the oldest multiple-arched curved stone railroad bridge in
the world), all while enjoying the great outdoors in one of its many parks: Patapsco
Valley State Park, Rockburn Branch Park and Troy Park.
OLD ELLICOTT CITY
Having just celebrated its 250th anniversary and still thriving after two back-to-back
floods, Ellicott City’s Main Street boasts 80+ shops, galleries, dining sports, salons,
and museums, offering visitors a plethora of things to explore along the streets of
this historic mill town.
SAVAGE
Home to the Historic Savage Mill, this once bustling textile mill is now home to a
vibrant community of shops and restaurants, offering all who visit a truly unique
shopping experience. When not exploring the great mill, be sure to lace up
those hiking boots and take a hike along one of the many trails that line the Little
Patuxent River.
Founded as a mining town based around its Granite quarries, the B&O railroad
once ran through Woodstock for granite deliveries. Now visitors can learn how to
be good steward of our environment at the Howard County Conservancy, explore
our local agriculture or grab a bite to eat at The Woodstock Inn. What was once
a B&O railroad station, this family-owned restaurant is now a destination spot for
hikers, mountain bikers, equine and nature enthusiasts alike.
As your Howard County Executive, I strive to ensure Howard County is the best place for all
our residents, businesses, and visitors. With the help of this guide, I hope you take time to
explore the many ways there are to experience what makes Howard County so great. I look
forward to seeing around the neighborhood!
