CLIL - Content and Language Integrated Learning
Action 1.E.3
CPD for 18 teachers
According to the ECML, Languages Other Than English (LOTE) face a crisis in many European countries. These
include languages such as French, German, Spanish and Italian.
Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) creates situations for content-based, meaningful language
use in LOTE classrooms, promoting learners’ motivation for LOTE. Building on previous CLIL pilots, our CLIL
work is developing recommendations to implement CLIL in Languages Other Than English in Transition Year.
This pilot project aims to provide upskilling for in-service teachers, develop resources and build a community
of core CLIL practitioners in Ireland. This is designed to increase learner motivation for foreign languages.
Main aims
•
Explore the potential of CLIL, with a view to extending its use in post-primary schools
•
Create a sustainable model of CPD, which can be developed and expanded through engagement and
collaboration with CLIL experts
•
Upskill teachers and establish the provision of CLIL in Transition Year
•
Design, trial and share new MFL CLIL resources

Recruitment for CLIL CPD
Recruitment for the 2021-2022 CLIL CPD took place in November 2021 over a period of two weeks.
Recruitment was publicised on the PPLI website, social media and through teacher professional network
conferences.
Guided by previous CLIL CPD feedback, CPD recruitment was postponed until later in the school year. At this
point, teachers knew if they had TY classes and a time was
chosen when the academic calendar was less busy.
This change in time was to optimise teachers’ engagement
with the CPD and avoid clashes with term exams, mock
exams and oral exams.
CLIL CPD

per week
•
