The Department of Education encourages post-primary schools to diversify the provision of foreign
languages by providing additional allocation, where possible and appropriate. Such additional allocation, as
per circular 0006/2020, enables schools to take ownership of new language subjects which helps to build
long-term sustainability.
For the academic year 2021-22 the additional allocation continues to include the new LC curricular languages
Lithuanian, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, and Portuguese, in addition to hours for Italian, Japanese, and Russian new and lesser taught languages that have availability of fully registered post-primary teachers.
Impact

In the audit of foreign languages provision, principals reported that an additional allocation is the only
way they could diversify foreign languages.
•
As a result, the Department of Education and PPLI facilitated applications for these additional allocation.
The circular was promoted among school leaders by PPLI.
