Collaboration with and dissemination of work by Council of Europe and European
Centre for Modern Languages (ECML) (1.C.10)
PPLI continue to explore relevant opportunities for dissemination of ECML projects, and have been actively
involved in Languages of Schooling, Action Research for Language Teachers, Supporting Multilingual
Classrooms and encouraging Communities of Practice. In 2018 PPLI facilitated the delivery of a third workshop
RELANG, relating tests and examinations to the CEFR for key stakeholders from relevant bodies including the
Inspectorate, the State Examinations Commission, the Professional Development Services for Teachers, Junior
Cycle for Teachers and the HEIs delivering PME programmes as well as a dedicated day for teachers. The
purpose of this third workshop to be facilitated by PPLI was that stakeholders would acquire confidence that
they understand how the broad alignment of the new Junior Cycle curriculum with the CEFR can be reflected
in summative assessment, acquire competence to create items that test students with proficiency on the
A1/A2 bands of the CEFR, and understand how to test aspects of the CEFR apart from levels e.g. Intercultural
Awareness and Language Awareness. The methodology that underpins the CEFR, which is reflected in the
assessment of students based on learning outcomes was also a key part of the workshop and teachers were
supported in learning how to approach the development of CBAs that reflect the CEFR.
Additional consultation also took place among stakeholders on indicative CEFR levels across all educational
levels (1.C.16).
Supports for Teaching and Learning
Support for the use of innovative teaching methods and ICT tools (1.C.11)
CPD and ITE
Education officers delivered a number of sessions in ITE and CPD settings. These sessions aimed to introduce
the work of PPLI as well as providing access to upskilling and professional development to teachers. The
sessions were delivered to PME students, Spanish Language Assistants and Heritage Language (Polish and
Lithuanian) teachers.
School visits are carried out to support teachers on the ground and ensure quality of teaching and learning.
Education Officers delivered workshops to MFL departments at the request of schools.
‘Everyone got so much out of it - we never get the chance to
sit down as a department and look at the bigger picture, it
was very empowering. And they all loved mentimeter and
the dialogue box too - I love the way you practice what you
preach in terms of presenting in an interactive and varied
way’ – (Teacher Dublin)
‘I would love to do more sessions like this’
(Teacher, Kerry)
