As a result of this audit, a Language Upskilling Scheme was created for Teachers qualifed in a language but
not currently teaching it.
Delivery of MFL Teacher Languages Upskilling Scheme (Action 2.A.3)
The MFL Teacher Languages Upskilling Scheme was targeted at teachers qualified in a language that they are
not currently teaching or are not teaching to full capacity. It was developed to develop existing but currently
unused language teaching capacity in our schools. The scheme covers curricular languages including French,
German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. With upskilling provided for the teachers, schools are given the
opportunity to expand their capacity in language provision and add new languages using existing teachers.
The scheme is currently running during the academic year 2018-19.
43 applications were successful. French was the most dominant language among the successful applications
(34%) followed by Spanish (31%). MFL teachers in French, German, Spanish and Italian languages are availing
of the upskilling scheme.
41% of successful applicants opted for an intensive course in the TL country, 35% for an on-site course, 12% for
an on-line course and 12% for an intensive course in Ireland. The applicants made it clear that they prefer the
traditional ‘classroom’ and authentic immersion as a means to improve their language skills.
The final report on the MFL Teacher Languages Upskilling Scheme will be produced in September 2019.
